I’ve been “playing” with Spotify recently. The way they sort the music with their “Genres & Moods” is perfect for me. I am satisfied with the playlists under varies Genres. Anyway, inspired by the “The New Classical” playlist, I googled contemporary classical music composers and learned about John Cage and his prepared piano. He started composing in 1951.
The Prepared Piano, is a classical piano which sound altered by placing rubber, metal screws and plastic on its strings. The altered sound is really interesting. I mean to imagine playing that “sound” with a grand piano. Well, nowadays we have digital piano to play varies sound digitally, but imagine back then in the 50s, it must be mind blowing.
The Prepared Piano actually reminds me of something I did to my old upright piano I used to have when I was a teen. The 3rd lower B was broken. The technician said it can’t be fixed but I just couldn’t stand a missing note! Then one summer, under the chilled air conditioner, there, I duct-taped a small tissue paper ball to the hammer. Well, it was not as good as new, it created a unclear vibration. But there you go, the technician said he couldn’t fix it, but I did, until today I’m still PROUD of it.
